What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry. It uses medical-grade solutions like hydrogen peroxide to eliminate stains and discoloration from the surface of your teeth. When applied to your enamel, hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the molecules within, making your smile appear brighter and more aesthetically pleasing.

What causes teeth to change color?

Most people experience yellow or stained teeth due to the natural aging process. Over the years, your tooth enamel wears away, revealing more of the yellow dentin beneath. Your teeth might also change color due to:

  • Oral trauma
  • Smoking
  • Eating foods that stain (berries or tomatoes)
  • Drinking dark beverages (coffee, red wine, and cola)
  • Taking a medication with tetracycline

You’re also more likely to experience stained or discolored teeth if you fail to regularly brush and floss your teeth.

What does teeth whitening involve?

At All Smiles Dentistry, teeth whitening is a brief outpatient procedure that typically takes less than 60 minutes. The team uses the strongest whitener available and treatment costs only $159.

First, your provider covers your tongue and gums with a rubber dam. Then, they apply a hydrogen peroxide gel to the surfaces of your teeth. The team uses a solution that’s 34% hydrogen peroxide, allowing for long-lasting results.

After the solution rests for about 10 minutes, your All Smiles Dentistry provider points a laser light at your teeth. The laser energy triggers a whitening reaction that cuts through stains and discoloration, making your smile appear lighter and more attractive.

The team repeats the same steps several times until your smile is the desired shade of white. Before you leave, your provider gives you at-home care instructions.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

The results of teeth whitening won't last forever, but they can last for half a year* and sometimes even longer. To extend the results of your treatment, the team recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing before going to bed
  • Quitting smoking
  • Drinking from a straw
  • Wearing a mouthguard
  • Avoiding bad habits like nail-biting and chewing on pen caps

If you want a bright, Hollywood-worthy smile, make a teeth whitening appointment at All Smiles Dentistry by calling the office today or scheduling online.
